Proto-Eskimo: *kaniv[ǝʁa]n
Meaning: diaphragm, skin on belly
Russian meaning: диафрагма, кожица на желудке
Proto-Yupik: *kanivǝʁan ?
Proto-Inupik: *kanivaun
Comments: In Inupik we observe a secondary development *-aan > *-aun under the influence of the instrumental suffix *-un. Obviously this stem is a borrowing from PCh *kạŋị-pɣạl 'diaphragm', preserved in Alutor. The first part is KCh *keŋi 'belly of fish or sea mammal', the second is *ǝpɣal 'lungs'. The original meaning was 'air- bladder' or literally 'lungs of/in fish belly'. The irregularities in phonetical development in modern languages are typical for loanwords.
