Proto-Eskimo: *qariɣ(u)- ~ *qaciɣ(u)
Meaning: seal (sp.)
Russian meaning: тюлень, нерпа (спец.)
Proto-Yupik: *qariɣ-ja-, *qariɣulǝɣ
Proto-Inupik: *qaciɣia-, [*qaiʁu-lǝɣ]
Comments: The second form in Inupik is probably borrowed from Yupik (where it has been strongly contaminated with *qariʁu '(birch) bark'). The first form, on the other hand, reflects a borrowing from the KCh compound *qạj+*šeɣʷǝ 'small sea lion'. It is interesting that while Yupik is rather reflecting the PCh pronunciation variant of the voiceless -r̃-, Inupik has a variant similar to the PKam form *siw-.
