\data\ie\piet
Proto-IE: *gnewǝ-
Meaning: to crush
Slavic: *gnjāvītī
Germanic: *knūw-ia- vb., *knū́w-an- m.
Russ. meaning: давить
References: WP I 580 f
Comments: Similar (not derived!) root forms are *gneup- (-b-), *gnet- (-d-), *gneug'-. Cf. also such a situation in *knewǝ- 'to press' with "related" knap- (-b-), *kneit- (-d-), etc. (there are many similar root forms in Germ and Balt). But there is no evidence of IE roots *g[e]n- 'to press' or *k[e]n- 'to scratch'.
