Proto-Afro-Asiatic: *warŝiʕ- ~ *ḥar(i)ŝ-
Meaning: rhinoceros
Semitic: *ḥar(i)ŝ/ŝx ( ~ *Hawuraris) 'rhinoceros'
Western Chadic: *wVriŝ- 'rhinoceros'
Central Chadic: *wirŝi 'bull'
Low East Cushitic: *worš- 'rhinoceros'
High East Cushitic: *worša(ʕ)- 'rhinoceros'
Warazi (Dullay): *wVršaʕ- 'rhinoceros'
Mogogodo (Yaaku): *wVrsVʔ- 'rhinoceros'
Notes: The resemblance of Sem. and Cush. forms is hardly an accidental coincidence, though Sem. *ḥ- vs. ECush. and Ch. *w- is enigmatic. In most of non-Semitic languages quoted, *ḥ- yeilds neither w- nor 0, but is preserved as ḥ or h.
