Afroasiatic etymology :

\data\semham\afaset
Proto-Afro-Asiatic: *ḥalag/k-
Meaning: (cotton) clothes
Semitic: *ḥVlVg- 'card cotton' (?)
Western Chadic: *galVk- 'loin-cloth'
Beḍauye (Beja): halak 'cloth, kerchief'
Saho-Afar: *ḥalag- 'rag, clothes'
Notes: Scarce data. Phonetics unreliable. Any connection with Sem *ḫulāḳ- 'old or torn clothes' (Akk ḫulāḳu, Hbr ḥalūḳ, Aram ḥalūḳā, Arab ḫalūḳ, Soq ḥalaḳ)? The Sem word may be derived from Sem *ḫVlVḳ- 'be torn'. In any case the correspondence of velars is irregular.
