Proto-Sino-Caucasian: *[χ]V́lʔV
Meaning: burden; back
Borean etymology: Borean etymology
North Caucasian: *χ_[ä]lʔV
Sino-Tibetan: *qālH
Comments and references : Cf. *GwVɫŏ 'side': the two roots are well distinguished in PNC, but have probably influenced each other in PST and PY. In PST it can explain -l- instead of the expected *-r in *qālH; on PY *χɔlab see under *GwVɫŏ. The root may be a very archaic derivative of *-ĭ́χ(k)V `to carry' q.v. Cf. PND *χai 'to carry; pack, burden', with a derivative in -ʎ, e.g. Navajo xḗʎ, -ɣḗʎ `pack, burden', etc.
