Proto-Sino-Tibetan: *[c]ik
Meaning: burn, scorch (earth)
Chinese: *ćit burn or scorch earth around the grave.
Tibetan: ãchig-pa to burn, destroy by fire.
Comments: The meaning 'masonry' in OCh. is probably a variant of the same basic meaning ("burned masonry around the grave"); however, a secondary merger is also possible: cf. Tib. rcig (p. (b)rcigs, f. bcig, i. (b)rcig(s)) to build, to wall up. See Coblin 50, 108.
