Proto-Sino-Tibetan: *ƛăj
Meaning: move, change
Chinese: *Łaj transfer, move.
Tibetan: rʒ́e (ṗ. brʒ́es, f. brʒ́e, i. brʒ́es) to barter.
Burmese: lajh to change, exchange, hlai to change, LB *lajx / *slajx.
Kachin: lai1, šǝlai1 pass, exceed; mǝlai3 to change; šǝbrai1 wages, pay, a reward.
Lushai: lei to buy, purchase; fine, debt (KC *k-lei).
Comments: KC: Tiddim laiʔ change, lei buy; Mikir le over, excess, profit; BG: Garo re pass, sre change, Dimasa lai pass, salai alter, change; Rawang lɛ, sǝlɛ pass, thǝlɛ alter, change. Cf. also Jnp. khǝli, khǝlai to pass, cross as on a road. Sh. 121; Ben. 64, 66; Coblin 54. There may be two roots here, but they are very hard to separate. Cf. Austric: PAA *la:j 'change, change form', PAN *aliq 'move, change place', *beli 'buy', Tai *kla:j 'to modify'.
