Proto-Yenisseian: *kassad
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: foot sole
Ket: kassat5, pl. kassɛrǝŋ6 (Bak., Sur. kassǝdǝŋ6)
Kottish: hačar, pl. hačaraŋ
Comments: ССЕ 235. Werner (1, 413) treats the word as a compound of *kas + *ʔaʔd 'bone' - which is possible and can explain the gemination in Ket. kassat. However, further identification of this *kas with Kott. hēči 'footwear' is impossible - because the latter has an excellent match in Ket. tɛ:śi, Yug čɛ:hs id., also acknowledged by Werner (2, 254), see *cēse. Werner also compares Kott. kāčoga 'ankle-bone', q.v. sub *giʔs.
