\data\cauc\aandet
Protoform: *nani ( ~ -o-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: pupil of the eye
Karata: nani-harḳa (Tok.)
Comments: Cf. also Anch. nani-harḳa id. The Kar. word is a compound with harḳa 'eye'; attested only in Kar., but having probable external parallels.
Protoform: *ničo
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 sickle 2 dagger 3 scythe
Andian language: ničo 3
Akhvakh: niča 1
Chamalal: niša 1,2
Tindi: niča 1,2
Karata: niča 1
Botlikh: niča 1,2
Godoberi: niča 1
Comments: Cf. also Cham. Gig. niča id.
Protoform: *nidV / *midV
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 eyebrow 2 eyelash 3 forehead
Andian language: nidu 1,2
Akhvakh: nido 3
Godoberi: mida 2
Comments: The meaning 'forehead' in Akhv. is a result of contamination with PA *hondV 'forehead' q.v.
Protoform: *nik:ʷV
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: chaff
Avar: nak:ú
Chadakolob: náku
Andian language: nik:u
Akhvakh: nixo
Chamalal: nikʷ
Tindi: nix:ʷa
Karata: nik:u
Botlikh: nik:u
Godoberi: nik:u
Comments: Av. paradigm B (nak:-dál; but Chad. A - gen. náku-l). Cf. also Akhv. Ratl. nixʷe.
Protoform: *nikʷo
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 knee 2 leg
Avar: náku 1
Chadakolob: naku 1
Andian language: nikʷol 2
Akhvakh: nikʷa 2
Chamalal: nikʷal 1
Tindi: niku 1
Botlikh: nuku 1
Bagvalal: nikʷ 1
Godoberi: nuku 1
Comments: Av. paradigm C (nakál-zul, náka-bi). Cf. also Av. Andal. ʕanaku (with "body part" prefixation). And. and Cham. have suffixed -l.
Protoform: *niḳ:ʷV
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: gadfly
Avar: niḳ:
Chadakolob: niḳ
Andian language: nič̣:u
Akhvakh: niḳ:i (Tlan.)
Chamalal: nuṣa
Karata: niḳ:e (Anch.)
Comments: Av. paradigm C (niḳ:í-l, níḳ:a-l), but Chad. A (níḳi-l, níḳa-l). Cf. also Kar. Tok. niḳ́:a, niḳ:u.
Protoform: *niʎV
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: sickle
Avar: niʎ
Chadakolob: nit
Comments: Av. paradigm C (plur. níʎa-l; Chad. notó-l, níta-l).
Protoform: *niqi (~-χ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 breast 2 brisket
Avar: mehéd 2
Chamalal: niχ 1
Tindi: niχi 1
Karata: niχe 1
Botlikh: niχi 1
Bagvalal: nih 1
Godoberi: niχi 1
Comments: Av. paradigm B or C (gen. mahdí-l); -d may be a result of partial contamination with another PEC root (see *qVdV), but as a whole Av. mehed is hard to separate from the Andian and EC root. *n- in PA is obviously secondary (an influence of the former medial *-n-).
Protoform: *nisV
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 linen 2 cloth 3 cobweb 4 loom
Avar: nusí 1,3
Akhvakh: niša 2, niši 3
Chamalal: nis 4
Tindi: nisa / nisi 4
Comments: Av. paradigm B (gen. nusí-dul). In some languages the root is also used within a distorted compound meaning 'spider' (see under *χwarVcV), cf., e.g., God. nusaχar. Cf. also Tind. is:qara-nis 'cobweb'. In the MSU recordings we find Cham. (U-Gakv.) nis 'loom': this is obviously the same word as nis: 'cloth' (recorded by Bokarev with a misspelling - or, perhaps due to contamination with a word reflected in Cham. Gig. as nis:u 'rope' and quite different etymologically: < PA *mirš:ʷi q.v.).
Protoform: *nixʷa ( ~ -o)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: peach
Karata: nixʷa
Bagvalal: nixʷa (Tlond.)
Protoform: *noc̣:i
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: louse
Avar: nac̣:
Chadakolob: nac̣
Andian language: noc̣:i
Akhvakh: nac̣:i
Chamalal: naṣ
Tindi: nac:i
Karata: nac̣:i
Botlikh: nac̣:i
Bagvalal: nac̣:
Godoberi: nac:i
Protoform: *nokʷo
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 oath 2 song
Andian language: nokʷo 1
Akhvakh: nikʷa 1,2
Chamalal: nakʷa 1
Tindi: nakʷa 1
Karata: nakʷa 1
Bagvalal: nak:ʷa (Leksika)
Godoberi: nakʷa
Comments: The Bagv. recording (in Leksika 1971) is obviously faulty instead of nakʷa (the And. word is also spelled there as nok:o). Unclear is the vowel -i- in Akhvakh.
Protoform: *nuco
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 prince 2 son-in-law, bride-groom
Avar: nucá-l 1
Andian language: nuso 2
Chamalal: nusa 2 (Khaidakov)
Comments: Av. paradigm B (pl. nucá-bi). Most Andian languages do not distinguish the stems *nuco 'bride-groom' and *nusa 'bride' (q.v.), because of the regular merger of *-c- - *-s- and *-o - *-a. The two roots, however, are well opposed in Avar (nucál 'prince' /cf. also nucí-ja-w id./ vs. nus 'bride') and And. (nuso vs. nusa).
Protoform: *nusa
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 daughter-in-law 2 bride
Avar: nus 1
Andian language: nusa 2
Akhvakh: nuša 1
Chamalal: nusa 1
Tindi: nusa 1
Karata: nusa 1
Botlikh: nusa 1
Bagvalal: nusa 1
Godoberi: nusa 1
Comments: Av. paradigm B (pl. nusá-bi ). The Av. word was borrowed in Arch. nus-dur 'daughter-in-law' (with a suffixation typical for Archi kinship terms).
Protoform: *nus:inHV (/*m-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: wild turkey
Andian language: nucĩʔo (Khaid)
Chamalal: nus:ija
Tindi: nus:eji
Comments: Cf. also Cham. Gig. mus:ija. The And. form (taken from Khaidakov 1973) is obviously misrecorded instead of *nus:ĩʔo (there is no -c- in Andian). Theoretically a reconstruction *ʔuns:inHV ( or *ʔums:inHV) is also possible; since the reflexes of this root are attested only in three languages, it is hard to choose between *ʔun- and *nu-.
Protoform: *-nV-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: a deictic particle
Andian language: -n(o)-,-n(e)-
Chamalal: hã-
Tindi: ã-
Comments: Used only in conjunction with other deictic stems. Cf. And. ho-no-w, he-ne-w 'this', hi-n(i)-di-w, hi-n(i)-gi-w etc. 'that'. In Tind. and Cham. the stem is preserved only as vowel nasalisation (Tind. ã-b, Cham. hã-w 'this').
Protoform: *-nV
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 ablative 2 translative
Avar: -an 1
Akhvakh: -(u)-ne 2
Protoform: [*-nV]

Meaning: pres. gerund
Avar: -un

Meaning: shame
Avar: nič
Protoform: *nVḳ:V
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: cloud
Avar: naḳ:
Chadakolob: naḳ
Comments: Paradigm C (naḳ:í-l, náḳ:a-l).
