Proto-West-Caucasian: *xʷara (~ f-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: thoroughbred horse
Adyghe: fāra
Kabardian: xʷāra
Comments: PAK *xʷará. Phonetically a perfect match would be PAT *fǝrǝ in Abkh. a-fǝ́r-χac̣a, Abaz. fǝr 'hero', if we assume a metaphoric use of the root in PAT.
Proto-West-Caucasian: *xʷǝ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to wound, wound
Abkhaz: á-χʷ-ra
Abaza: χʷ-ra
Comments: PAT *xʷǝ- (cf. also Bzyb. á-xʷ-ra).
Proto-West-Caucasian: *x́ʷǝ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to curse, damn
Abkhaz: á-š̌ij-ra
Abaza: šʷej-ra
Comments: PAT *sʷǝ-jǝ- (cf. also Bzyb. á-ś̌ij-ra). The PWC reconstruction is tentative (PAT *sʷ can go back to *sʷ, *šʷ or *x́ʷ).
Proto-West-Caucasian: *xʷǝč̣́ǝ ?
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: small
Abkhaz: a-χwč̣́ǝ́
Comments: Isolated in Abkh. (cf. also Bz. a-xʷč̣́ǝ́); etymology obscure.
Proto-West-Caucasian: *xʷV
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to sift
Abkhaz: a-χʷ-rá
Abaza: χʷ-ra
Kabardian: wǝ-xʷa-nṣ́ǝ-n
Ubykh: -xa-
Comments: PAT *xʷǝ; Ub. 1st p. a-sǝ́-xa-n. The Kab. form is a compound verb (wǝ-xʷa-n "sifting" + ṣ́ǝ-n "to do"). In PAK cf. also *xʷǝ-zǝ- 'to press (as orange)', reflected in Kab. xʷǝzǝ-n, Ad. fǝzǝ-n.
Proto-West-Caucasian: *x́ʷV
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to fall, fall into 2 to get into 3 to fit into
Abkhaz: a-ta-š̌a-rá 1
Abaza: ta-šʷa-ra 1,3
Adyghe: da-fa-n 2
Kabardian: te-xʷa-n 2
Ubykh: χ́a- 1
Comments: PAT *sʷa- (used only with preverbs); cf. also Bzyb. a-ta-ś̌a-rá 'to fall into', Abkh. á-kʷ-š̌a-ra (Bzyb. á-kʷ-ś̌a-ra) 'to get into', Abaz. a-kʷ-šʷa-ra 'to get into; to fall on smth., smb.'. PAK *-xʷa- (also used with locative preverbs). Ub. 1 p. sǝ-χ́á-n. The correspondence PAT *sʷ : PAK *xʷ : Ub. χ́ points to PWC *x́ʷ.
Proto-West-Caucasian: *xʷV
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 price 2 to buy 3 to pay
Abkhaz: á-χʷ 1
Abaza: χʷǝ 1
Adyghe: š́a-fǝ-n 2
Kabardian: śa-xʷǝ-n 2
Ubykh: fa- 3
Comments: PAT *xʷǝ (cf. Bzyb. á-xʷ) 'price', *xʷǝ-ʕa- 'to buy' (Abkh. á-χʷħa-ra, Abaz. χʷʕa-ra); PAK *š́:a-xʷǝ- (a compound with *š́:a- 'to sell' in the first part); Ub. a-s-fá-n (cf. also a noun: fa 'profit'). In Ubykh *xʷ usually gets delabialised ( > x; Ubykh does not have a labialised xʷ); the reason why it changed to f in this case is unclear. Another solution would be to reconstruct PWC *fV ( regularly > Ub. f, PAK *xʷ) with an irregular (dialectal?) change *f > *xʷ in PAT.
Proto-West-Caucasian: *χa
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: we
Abkhaz: ħa-rá
Abaza: ħa-ra
Comments: PAT *ħa. Despite Dumézil 1932 there can be no connection with PAK *t:a or Ub. š́ǝ- 'we'.
Proto-West-Caucasian: *χa
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: bottom, lower part
Ubykh: χa
Comments: Isolated in Ub., but with probable EC cognates.
Proto-West-Caucasian: *χa
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to weave 2 to knit
Abkhaz: a-ħa-rá 1
Abaza: -ħa-ra 1
Adyghe: χa-n 2
Kabardian: χa-n 2
Ubykh: χa- 2
Comments: PAT *ħa (in Abaz. the root is used only with preverbs); PAK *χa- (also *χǝ- > Ad., Kab. χǝ-n id.); Ub. a-s-χá-n. See Mészáros 1934, 384, Shagirov 2, 109; the alternative comparison of PAK *χǝ- with PAT *xaxa- 'to spin' is unacceptable for phonetic reasons.
Proto-West-Caucasian: *χa ( ~ χ́-, χI-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to hang
Abkhaz: a-ḳná-ħa-ra
Abaza: ḳnǝ-ħa-ra
Comments: PAT *ħa- (used only with preverbs).
Proto-West-Caucasian: *χ́aq:ʷǝ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: stone
Abkhaz: χaħw
Abaza: ħaqwǝ
Comments: PAT *ħaqʷǝ (Abaz. ħaqʷǝ) / *qaħʷǝ (Abkh. a-χáħʷ, cf. also Bz. a-χáħʷ). Since there are no AK and Ub. data, the PWC reconstruction is only tentative.
Proto-West-Caucasian: *χ(I)a-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to hear 2 to be heard, reach one's ears
Abkhaz: a-ħa-rá 1
Abaza: ħa-ra, ʕa-ħa-ra 2
Comments: PAT *ħa-. The PWC reconstruction is tentative: without Ub. and AK parallels we could reconstruct *χ, *χ́,*q̇I,*q̇́I,*χI or *χ́I.
Proto-West-Caucasian: *χÍamǝlǝ-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: worm
Adyghe: ħāmlǝw
Kabardian: ħambǝlǝw
Comments: PAK *ħamǝLǝ-wǝ.
Proto-West-Caucasian: *χIa(n)ƛǝ (~ -ƛ́-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 shovel 2 scoop
Kabardian: ħanš / ħaš 2
Ubykh: χIaš́ 1
Comments: Kab. ħaš is used in the compound pχa-ħaš 'wooden scoop' (Old Kab. > Abaz. pχaħač́). For PWC it is possible to reconstruct initial *χI- or *χ́I-, medial *ƛ (if Kab. š < PAK *č) or *ƛ́ (if Kab. š < PAK *č́). See Shagirov 2, 23.
Proto-West-Caucasian: *χIV ( / *t-χIV)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to scrape, scratch
Adyghe: jǝ-tχǝ-n
Kabardian: ṗas-tχa-n
Ubykh: χIa-
Comments: PAK *tχǝ- / tχa- (used with preverbs, see Shagirov 2, 45-46); Ub. a-s-χIá-n.
Proto-West-Caucasian: *χIʷa
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to curse, offend 2 curse, offence
Abkhaz: á-čʷ-ħa-ra 1
Abaza: čʷ-ħa-ra 1
Adyghe: χʷāna-n 1
Kabardian: ja-χʷana-n 1
Ubykh: cʷǝ-χIá 2
Comments: PAT *cʷǝ-ħa- (a compound with *cʷǝ- 'bad, evil' = Ub. cʷǝ-χIá). PAK *χʷa-na- 'to curse' is actually a nominal derivate from *χʷa-nǝ 'curse' (preserved in Kab. χʷan), which itself is originally a nominal form of the verbal stem *χʷa-. Delabialisation in PAT and Ub. is due to dissimilation (with the labialised cʷ- of the 1st compound element). Cf. also PAK *χʷǝ-ć̣a- > Kab., Ad. χʷǝṣ́a-n 'to quarrel, swear, grumble' (probably borrowed into Ubykh as χʷǝć̣á- / χʷǝč̣́á- 'être excité'. In Abaz. there are also variants ħʷa-čʷa-ra 'to prate, twaddle', čʷǵa-ħʷa-ra 'to talk scandal' (but these may contain PAT *ħʷa 'to speak').
Proto-West-Caucasian: *χIʷV
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to graze (intr.) 2 to graze (trans.)
Abkhaz: a-ħʷ-rá 1
Abaza: ħʷ-ra 1
Adyghe: χʷǝ-n 1
Kabardian: ʁa-χʷǝ-n 2
Ubykh: χIǝ- 1
Comments: PAT *ħʷǝ; PAK *χʷǝ; Ub. ja-χIǝ́-n (with secondary loss of labialisation). See Mészáros 1934, 400; Shagirov 1, 312.
Proto-West-Caucasian: *χIʷV ( ~ *qIʷV)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to crawl 2 to drag
Abkhaz: a-ħʷa-za-rá 1
Abaza: r-ħʷħʷa-ra 2
Ubykh: χIʷǝχIʷ-dá- 1
Comments: PAK *ħʷa (cf. also Abkh. a-r-ħʷa-za-rá 'to drag'). Abaz. and Ub. have an expressive reduplication.
Proto-West-Caucasian: *χ́V
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: more
Abkhaz: ájħa
Abaza: a(j)ħa
Adyghe: nāh
Kabardian: naχ
Ubykh: ća-χ́
Comments: PAT *(ajǝ)-ħa (with a reciprocal prefix); PAK *ná-χ́ǝ (with a deictic prefix na-). In Ub. ća- is a comparative prefix. See Shagirov 1,281 with literature (justly singling out the common WC root morpheme *χ́V "more"; however, Shagirov's linking this root with PAT *ħaraḳǝ 'high' is probably wrong).
