Proto-Tsezian: *ʔažʷǝ (~ħ-,-ž:ʷ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 tree 2 bush
Tsezi: ažo 1
Ginukh: aže 1
Khvarshi: aža 1 (Radzhibov)
Inkhokvari: ažan 2
Comments: PTsKh *ʔažʷǝ (for -žʷ- cf. Tsez. Sant. ažʷi). Inkh. ažan < *ʔažʷǝ-R with a common suffixed *-R.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔeč-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to vomit
Tsezi: ʕeč-n-
Ginukh: ič-ā-
Comments: PTsKh *ʔeč-.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔeč̣
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: a k. of reed (рогоз)
Bezhta: ʕeč̣ (Tlad.)
Comments: Cf. also Bezht. Khosh. ec̣ id.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔeč̣V- (~ħ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: yellow
Tsezi: ič̣iw
Ginukh: ič̣diju
Khvarshi: -ejč̣u (Radzhibov)
Inkhokvari: eč̣uḳa
Comments: PTsKh *ʔeč̣V-.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔeḳ-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to go, walk
Tsezi: iḳ-
Comments: Attested only in Tsez., but having probable external parallels.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔẽʎ:-(nɔ)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: six
Tsezi: iʎno
Ginukh: iʎno
Khvarshi: ẽjʎa
Inkhokvari: ĩʎ / ẽʎ
Bezhta: iʎna
Gunzib: iʎno
Comments: PTsKh *ʔẽʎ-no; PGB *ʔiʎ-n[ɔ] (with -i- on analogy with *ʎi-nɔ 'five').
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔeme A
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: spring
Tsezi: im
Khvarshi: ime
Inkhokvari: eme
Bezhta: eme-da
Gunzib: eme-d
Comments: PTsKh *ʔem(e), PGB *ʔeme-d(a) (with an original locative suffix).
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔemu A
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: awl
Tsezi: imu
Ginukh: imu
Khvarshi: imu
Inkhokvari: emu
Bezhta: emo
Gunzib: emu
Comments: PTsKh *ʔemu (cf. also Tsez. /Bokarev/ emu, Gin. /Lomtadze/ imu/emu); PGB *ʔemu.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔẽsǝ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: snow
Tsezi: isi
Ginukh: iše
Khvarshi: ĩsa
Inkhokvari: ẽso
Bezhta: õz
Gunzib: ǝ̃z
Comments: PTsKh *ʔẽsǝ; PGB *ʔǝ̃z (cf. also Bezht. Tlad. õz, Khosh. oz). PGB *ʔǝ̃z is probably an analogical building from the oblique base *ʔǝ̃zi-, built with Ablaut (a regular correspondence for PTsKh *ẽ would be PGB *ẽ).
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔes:- (~ɨ,ǝ,o,ɔ)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: male
Tsezi: is-lu
Comments: Attested only in Tsez., but with probable external parallels.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔẽš: A
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: apple
Tsezi: heneš
Ginukh: iši / ʕiši
Khvarshi: hĩjoš
Inkhokvari: ẽš
Bezhta: ẽš (Tlad.)
Gunzib: ẽš
Comments: PTsKh *ʔẽš; PGB *ʔẽš (cf. also Bezht. Khosh. es). The aberrant Tsez. and Khvarsh. forms (heneš and hĩjoš) go back to a PTsKh compound *hĩ+ʔẽš ("pear"+"apple", see PTs *hĩ 'pear').
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔetag̥1̇a-r
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: eagle
Inkhokvari: etakan
Comments: Isolated in Inkh., but with probable external parallels. Inkh. -k- presupposes PTs *-k- or *-g̥1̇-; Inkh. -n - PTs *-r, *-l or *-n.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔeχen (~ħ-,-ǝn)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: big stone
Tsezi: aħin
Khvarshi: eχen (Radzhibov)
Comments: PTsKh *ʔeχen. In Tsez. (Imnaishvili quotes also dialectal forms: eħen, aχIin, eχIen).
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔeχ:en
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 sack 2 pillow
Tsezi: iχin 1
Khvarshi: eχen 1,2
Inkhokvari: eχen 1,2
Comments: PTsKh *ʔeχen.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔẽχ:u A
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: river
Tsezi: iħu
Ginukh: iχu
Khvarshi: ẽχu (Bokarev)
Inkhokvari: ẽχIu
Bezhta: ẽχe
Gunzib: ẽχu
Comments: PTsKh *ʔẽχIu (cf. also Tsez. in Imnaishvili's notation iχIu); PGB *ʔẽχu (cf. also Bezht. Tlad. ẽχö, Khosh. eχo; Bezht. prop. ẽχe reflects the original obl. base, cf. Gunz. ẽχe-, Bezht. Tlad. ẽχe-). Lomtadze lists also a Gin. form iqIu 'river', which is possibly a misspelling instead iχu or iχIu.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔẽzɔ A ( ~ -z:-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: wild turkey
Ginukh: izo
Khvarshi: ĩzo (Radzhibov)
Inkhokvari: ẽzo
Comments: PTsKh *ʔẽzo.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔ[ẽ]zu A ( ~ -z:-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: cheese
Tsezi: izu
Ginukh: ižu
Khvarshi: ĩzu (Radzhibov)
Inkhokvari: ẽzu
Bezhta: õzo (Tlad.)
Gunzib: ǝ̃zu
Comments: PTsKh *ʔẽzu; PGB *ʔǝ̃zu (cf. also Bezht. Khosh. ozo; Gunz. (G.) ɔ̃zu is probably an incorrect recording). The vowel *-ǝ̃- in PGB is irregular.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔǝgV (~-ɨ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: near
Tsezi: igo
Ginukh: igo
Khvarshi: agol
Inkhokvari: oge
Comments: PTsKh *ʔǝgV (the reason for -i- instead of -e- in Gin. is not clear).
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔǝ̃ʁ:(-ʁ:ʷǝdǝ)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: sweat
Tsezi: eʁʷedi
Ginukh: eʁʷada
Khvarshi: aʁuda (Radzhibov)
Inkhokvari: oʁʁodo
Bezhta: had
Gunzib: hɔ̃d
Comments: A complicated case. The PTsKh form may be reconstructed as *ʔǝʁ-ʁʷVdǝ, where the second component is most likely equal to *ʁʷǝdǝ 'rain' (cf. analogous compounds "sweat"+"water" or "sweat"+"liquid" in PWC, see *ɦămƛ̣ă). In this case, the PGB form, reconstructed as *hɔ̃d, must also be a contraction < *ʔɔ̃hɔ̃d(V) < *ʔǝ̃ʁ:+ʁ:ʷǝdǝ (the second component normally reflected in PGB as *wǝdǝ q.v.), thus suggesting nasalisation of the first component *ʔǝ̃ʁ:.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔǝr (~ʕ-,ħ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 raspberry 2 blackberry
Bezhta: oj-do 1
Gunzib: ɨr (kãj) 2
Comments: PGB *ʔǝr (or *ʔɔr, cf. Gunz. (G.) ɔr kãj 'raspberry'); cf. also Bezht. Khosh. ordo, Tlad. ordijo. The root originally meant "red" (cf. the external evidence) and is shaped as an adjective (with adjective -do/-dijo suffixation) in Bezht.
