Comment: Cf. also Lezg. Khl. p:ürq̇ü 'blind', Tab. burq̇Iu id., Düb. bulq̇Iu 'matter in the eye' (pointing directly to PL *-l-), Ag. Fit., Burk. ṗaIr, Bursh. ṗaʡ id. In Ag. ṗ- < *p:- by assimilation; the vowel reflex -aI- is not quite clear. The adjective stems ( = nominal oblique stems) in all languages point to a PL obl. base *p:olq̇Iɨ-.
Comment: In Lezg. -q > -χ (but cf. erg. p:q:á-di, pl. p:q:a-r). Irregular expressive reflexes of the same root are probably Arch. (with metathesis and abnormal consonant reflexes) qip 'faeces', qup-un 'dried snot in nose', Rut. (Luch.) paq "bear's dung".
Comment: The Ag. and Bud. words are hard to separate; in view of the external evidence the Ag. meaning must be secondary (through an intermediate meaning like "clitoris" - cf. analagous semantic shifts in the root *ḳħǝlč̣V). With expressive irregularities cf. also Tab. Düb. baIt:aj 'vagina (of a girl)'.
Comment: The variation between Arch. k ( < *k or *k:) and Rut. ḳ ( < *ḳ) is unclear (we should expect *k:, thus something is wrong with the Rut. form). Medial *-l- (not *-r-) is reconstructed on basis of Arch. -r- before a velar (*-r- would have disappeared).
Comment: The Ag. word is from the Burshag dialect (in Richa the root is reduplicated: baba-f). The semantic shift 'big'/'good' is rather common. Vowels are hard to reconstruct (but probably there was *i in the first syllable).
Comment: Cf. Arch. erg. purχ:e. Arch. -r- before a uvular goes back only to PL *-l-. The Rut. form is irregular (*purχ would be expected), which must be explained by the expressive nature of the root (perhaps also a contamination with PL *p[e]χ 'blister, bubble' q.v.).
Comment: Vocalism is hard to establish (mainly because of the root's expressive nature). In Lezg., besides the adjective purp:u (cf. also Akht. p:ɨrp:ɨ) there exists an expressive suffixed formation: bub-uχ "cock's wattle"). The original meaning of the root must have been "soft, fluffy hair, down" (cf. the external evidence; note that in Ud. pop also means "goat's wool"). Since -r- is observed only in adjectival forms, it must be an adjectival infix here.
Comment: An expressive root, but obviously very archaic. Most Lezghian forms point to PL *pur or *por; the Arch. form parχ may have been influenced by Avar. parχ:ine.
Comment: The original form probably contained both glottalized consonants, which were secondarily deglottalized in Kryz., Bud. and Arch. The word belongs to the 3d class in all class-distinguishing languages.
