Comment: The word is contaminating with the PL root for 'tongs' q.v. (Tab. uḳan q̇Ianc: means literally 'grass tongs'). Although this is obviously a folk-etymology, it creates problems for the precise reconstruction of the PL form.
Comment: Pharyngealization in Ag. is secondary - in front of an original front vowel, cf. dialectal forms: Bursh. qeqe-r, Burk. qeqe-f. Also regular is the shift *-ä- > -e- > -u- in a preaccented syllable after the uvular consonant.

Some irregularities (notably, the loss of glottalization in Lezg. and the weak reflex -q̇ in Ag. and Tab.) are explained by the roots reduplicated and expressive nature.

Comment: Cf. Lezg. erg. qurq:u-ni. Arch. -r- points to PL *-l- (*-r- would be lost in this position). Lezg. does not reveal the expected effect of pharyngealization (qürq would be regularly expected) - probably because of secondary vowel reduction in forms like qurq:u-ni.
Comment: Cf. also Tab. lit. qIut(:), Düb. qIut:u, Ag. Tp. qIʷat:. These forms should be kept distinct from the reflexes of PL *qIan: q.v.; -t: in Tab. and Ag. most probably reflect the PL voiced *d typical for expressive roots.
Comment: Cf. also Tab. Düb. qIaqI, Ag. Fit. qIʷaqIʷ. Obl. base unknown (Lezg. qüq:ʷe- may point to *-a or -ä).
It is interesting to note that the compound *qIʷaqIʷ + *s:ɨw ('nose'+'mouth') served in Ag. as the word for 'face' (Ag. qIusi, Fit. qIusu, Burk. qessu with phonetic simplifications).
