Proto-Lezghian: *ṭams(:)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: carpet
Lezghian: ṭams (Khl.)
Agul: ṭams
Rutul: ṭams
Proto-Lezghian: *-ṭa(n)
Meaning: comparative
Tabasaran: -ṭan
Agul: ? -da-la
Udi: -t:an 'while'
Proto-Lezghian: *ṭap / *ṭaṗ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 hollow log 2 trap 3 lock 4 hive 5 tent 6 trough
Lezghian: ṭab 1
Tabasaran: ṭaṗar 3
Agul: ṭaw 3 (Burk.)
Rutul: ṭaṗ 2 (Kich.)
Tsakhur: ṭapan 4
Kryz: ṭäṗän 5
Udi: t:ap:an 6
Comment: The Ag. form stems from the Burk. dialect, thus ṭaw < *ṭab < *ṭaṗ. The original *-p is preserved in Tsakh.; all other languages reflect a secondary variant *ṭaṗ(an) with assimilated *ṗ. A form withoutsuffixes is reflected in Lezg., Rut. and Ag.; other languages either reflect a form with a common suffix *-an (Tsakh., Kryz., Ud.) or the original plural form *ṭap-ar (Tab., cf. also Lezg. daṗar / ṭaṗar 'lock', Lezg. Khl. ṭaṗar id.). Cf., perhaps, also Tsakh. ṭopi 'jug, jar' (with a secondary vowel labialisation) = Ud. t:op:i id.

The Ud. form t:ap:an may have been borrowed from Arm. tapan (all the Lezg. forms with -an are derived from this source by Vinogradova-Klimov 1979, 157); however, it is less probable for Kryz. and Tsakh. - and in general, considering the lack of IE etymology of the Armenian word, it seems much more probable that Arm. tapan was itself borrowed from a Caucasian source.

Proto-Lezghian: *ṭaṭ-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: cap
Kryz: ṭäṭäχ
Comment: The Kryz. word is isolated within Lezghian, but has parallels in some Andian and Tsezian languages. -äχ is an expressive suffix.
Proto-Lezghian: *ṭaṭa
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: stick (with a hook) for working wool and leather
Rutul: ṭaṭal
Tsakhur: ṭaṭa (Gelm.)
Comment: 4th class in both languages. The Rut. form contains a suffixed -l. The word means '(pointed) stick' in Tsakh.; cf. also Rut. Ams. ṭaṭal 'staff'.
Proto-Lezghian: *ṭäIm:- (~ *ṭäIp:-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: butterfly
Tabasaran: baIṭli (Düb.)
Rutul: ṭäbäbäl
Comment: The Düb. form is metathesized (baIṭli < *ṭaIbli). Both *m: and *p: can be reconstructedon basis of Tab. and Rut. data; external evidence suggests *m:.
Proto-Lezghian: *ṭäInḳ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: drop
Agul: ṭinḳ
Rutul: ṭanḳ
Tsakhur: ṭ́anḳ́
Kryz: ṭɨḳɨn
Budukh: ṭiḳ
Comment: Cf. also Tsakh. Gelm. ṭaInḳ., Bud. ṭiḳ-en 'freckles'. Obl. base *ṭäInḳa- (Rut. ṭánḳɨ-, Tsakh. Gelm. ṭaInḳa-). 3d class in most class-distinguishing languages, but 4th class in Bud.

    See Лексика 1971, 188; Гигинейшвили 1977, 81.

Proto-Lezghian: *ṭeʡʷa
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 rope 2 rope made of plant stalks
Rutul: ṭuʔI
Tsakhur: ṭoʔIa
Archi: duhIu-ni 2
Comment: Cf. also Tsakh. prop. ṭoIʔ 'rope'. d- in Arch. is not quite clear: perhaps an early dissimilation < ṭ- before *-ʡ-.
Proto-Lezghian: *ṭeIč̣ʷ-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: lead
Archi: ṭeIč̣u
Comment: Attested only in Arch., but having probable external parallels.
Proto-Lezghian: *ṭ-eƛ̣ʷäl-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to burst, split
Tabasaran: ṭu=ḳ-
Agul: ṭulḳan- (Bursh.)
Rutul: ṭu=q̇ʷe-
Tsakhur: ʁu-ṭo=ḳal-
Kryz: ṭo=q̇l-
Budukh: so-ṭo=q̇l-
Udi: t:op:
Comment: A verb with the common PL expressive preverb *ṭ-.
Proto-Lezghian: *ṭelq̇Iʷ (~ *ṭulq̇I)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 shin 2 ankle
Agul: ṭurʕe 1
Rutul: ṭurq̇I 2
Comment: Rut. -r- in the cluster with following uvulars goes back only to PL *-l-. As for the vocalism, it can be either *u or *-e- with following labialisation (there are too few data to make the choice); external evidence seems to be in favour of the latter variant.

From some Ag. dialect the word was borrowed in Darg. Chir. ṭuIr 'shin'.

Proto-Lezghian: *ṭ[e]mṭ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 freckle 2 wart, nipple 3 nipple, female breast
Lezghian: ṭʷeṭʷ-el 1
Tabasaran: ṭiṭ 1
Agul: ṭalṭam 1
Rutul: ṭiṭ 2
Udi: c:ic:-ik: 3
Comment: An expressive root, thus the precise reconstruction is somewhat difficult. The word probably contained -m- in Inlaut, cf. the labialization in Lezg. and the Ag. form (ṭalṭam < *ṭVmṭ-al = Lezg. ṭʷeṭʷel). The suffixed -Vl is probably an exact match for the Av. and Bezht. forms q.v.

    See Хайдаков 1973, 49.

Proto-Lezghian: *ṭemṭ / *ṭamṭ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 fly 2 bee
Lezghian: ṭʷeṭ 1
Agul: ṭuṭ 1
Rutul: dɨd 1
Tsakhur: ṭoṭ 2
Kryz: ṭɨṭ 1
Budukh: ṭuṭ 1
Archi: ṭanṭ 2
Udi: t:at: 1
Comment: Cf. also Lezg. Khl. ṭʷaṭ. Medial *-m- is safely reconstructed on basis of Arch. -n- and labialisation in Lezg. (ṭʷeṭ < *ṭewṭ < *ṭemṭ), and is also supported by labialized vowels in most languages. Rut. dɨd is a result of irregular (expressive) transformations. 3d class in all class-distinguishing languages. Oblique base *ṭemṭa- (/*ṭamṭa-) can be reconstructed on basis of Tsakh. ṭoṭa-.

    See Лексика 1971, 156; Талибов 1980, 285.

Proto-Lezghian: *ṭeqIʷ(a) ( ~ -ä-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: speck, spot
Lezghian: ṭʷeχ / ṭeχʷ
Tabasaran: ṭaqIʷ
Comment: Cf. also Tab. Kand. ṭuqI 'freckle, mole' (lit. Tab. also has ṭuqI-ar 'freckles').
Proto-Lezghian: *ṭeṭ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: flower
Tsakhur: ṭeṭ́
Udi: c:ic:ik:
Comment: Ud. reflects a diminutive *ṭeṭ-iḳ (for phonetic reasons it can not be considered a loan from Turk. čeček). 4th class in Tsakh.
Proto-Lezghian: *ṭi-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 small 2 few 3 little finger
Lezghian: ṭi-mil 2
Archi: ṭi 1
Udi: t:i-lin k:äšä 3
Comment: In Lezg. and Ud. the root is expanded by suffixes (in Ud. k:äšä - 'finger'). Cf. also Arch. ṭī-nna 'few', Lezg. Khl. ṭe-mil id.
Proto-Lezghian: *ṭi-leḳ (?)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: fruit stone
Tsakhur: ṭiliḳ
Comment: Probably an old compound; but although the second part (-liḳ) has a fairly good external etymology, the first part is not quite clear (cf., perhaps, PL *ṭi- 'small' ?).
Proto-Lezghian: *ṭimʎ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: pimple
Tsakhur: ṭix (Mishl.)
Archi: ṭinʎ
Comment: For final *ʎ cf. Arch. pl. ṭinʎ-um. Arch. -n-and Tsakh. -0- before a lateral point to PL *-m-.
Proto-Lezghian: *ṭinḳ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: birth-mark, mole
Agul: ṭinḳ (Bursh.)
Comment: Isolated in Ag., but having probable external parallels.
Proto-Lezghian: *ṭɨl (~-o-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 finger 2 finger-nail 3 thimble
Rutul: ṭili 1
Tsakhur: ṭul-ung 3
Kryz: ṭil 1
Budukh: ṭil 1,3
Archi: ƛ̣on-ṭol 2
Comment: 3d class in all class-distinguishing languages. The Tsakh. form is a derivate (the simple root was not preserved there); on the etymology of Arch. ƛ̣onṭol see under *ʔirƛ̣:ʷär- 'cut, slaughter'.

    See Лексика 1971, 120; Талибов 1980, 284.
