Proto-Lezghian: *q:Iop:
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: frog
Lezghian: q:ib
Tabasaran: ʁIub
Agul: (q:arka)-R̀ub
Rutul: ʁIɨb
Kryz: q:ub
Budukh: q:ub-laʁa
Comment: Cf. also Lezg. erg. qip:re, Tab. Khiv. q:Iub, Ag. Bursh. R̀u, Burk. R̀uwan-caj, Tp. ʕub. 3d class in all class-distinguishing languages. The Bud. form may have experienced the Azerb. influence (cf. Azerb. Gurbaʁa > Tsakh. q̇ulbaʁa), but is certainly not a loanword. Irregular transformations of the same root can be discovered in Tab. Kand. ʁIumṗa-ṭaṭa, Düb. baq:Ia-cacaj 'frog'.
Proto-Lezghian: *q:Iora
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: hare
Lezghian: q:ür
Tabasaran: ʁIur
Agul: R̀ür
Rutul: ʁIɨr
Tsakhur: ʁIɨje
Kryz: q:ur
Budukh: q:ur
Udi: ʁu
Comment: Cf. also Tab. Düb. q:Iur, Ag. Fit. ʁIur, Burk. Rar, Tp. ʕur, Tsakh. Gelm. ʁIɨjä. Oblique stem *q:Iorä- (Lezg. q:üre-, Tab. ʁIura-, Düb. q:Iura-, Ag. R̀üra-, Fit. ʁIura-, Rut. ʁIɨrá-). 3d class in all class-distinguishing languages.

    See Талибов 1960a, 297.

Proto-Lezghian: *q:Iun
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: shoulder
Lezghian: q:ün
Tabasaran: ʁIun
Agul: R̀un
Rutul: ʁIun
Kryz: qunä
Archi: qIun
Comment: Unclear is q- in Kryz. (q:- should be expected). Cf. also Ag. Bursh. R̀un, Fit. ʁIun, Burk. R̀an, Tp. ʕun. Obl. stem unclear (but not *-a, judging by Lezg. erg. q:ünü, loc. q:üne, Tab. ʁIuni-, Ag. Bursh. R̀uni-); 4th class in Rut., Arch., 3d class in Kryz.

    See Лексика 1971,122; Гигинейшвили 1977, 73, 85; Талибов 1980, 304.

Proto-Lezghian: *q:Iurt:iƛ̣:an
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: pillow
Lezghian: qüc:ügan
Agul: R̀urdek:in
Rutul: ʁurdigän
Tsakhur: ʁunelek
Kryz: q:uǯukan (Al.)
Budukh: q:üškü-d
Comment: Cf. also Lezg. Khl. q:ücügen, Ag. Burk. R̀ardek:en. 3d class in Rut., Tsakh. and Kryz., 4th class in Bud. A long word with rather expected metatheses and dissimilations; nevertheless, the PL form is sufficiently well reconstructable. Major irregularities: Lezg. -g- instead of (lit.) -ḳ-, (Khl.) -k:- - a result of early deglottalisation (*-ƛ̣:- > *-ƛ:-); Tsakh. ʁunelek (with a variant ʁulenik; cf. also Gelm. ʁunanik, Tsakh. proper q:uńanik) < *q:udinVƛ̣: / *q̇:ulinVƛ̣: (note the early secondary lateralisation -d- > -l- under the influence of *-ƛ̣:, which later regularly changed to -k); loss of pharyngealisation in the Eastern area (for PL it must be reconstructed on the Lezg. and Ag. evidence).

Since the meanings 'pillow' and 'sack' are often interchangeable, it seems tempting to link with this root also Arch. ƛ̣:ut:ali 'sack' - possibly an assimilative development from the expected *qIut:aƛ̣:i(n).

In Proto-Shakh-Dagh the word must have sounded *q:uǯiḳ:in (cf. modern forms: Kryz. q:uǯukan, Bud. - with some irregularities - q̇:üšküd). This form was most probably borrowed in Khin. iχčiḳin 'pillow' (which can not be a genuinely related form).

Proto-Lezghian: *q:Iʷeṭ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 crop, craw 2 gullet 3 third stomach
Tabasaran: ʁIudʁIud 1
Tsakhur: ʁIoṭ 2
Budukh: q̇aṭq̇aṭ 3
Comment: In Tab. and Bud. there occurred assimilations (usual for roots with two stops).
Proto-Lezghian: *q:Iʷeṭ- > *q̇:Iʷet:-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: tortoise
Udi: q:oIdiI
Comment: Attested only in Ud., but having probable external parallels.
Proto-Lezghian: *q:Iʷiw(a)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 tuber, Chaerophillum caucasicum 2 radish
Lezghian: q:ew 1
Agul: ʕuj (Tp.) 2
Archi: qIʷib 1
Comment: The Ag. word is cited from Magometov; cf. ibid. Ag. Fit. ʁIuj 'radish'. Obl. base unclear. 4th class in Archi.
Proto-Lezghian: *q:ɨm- (~-u-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: cluster, bunch
Udi: ʁuma
Comment: Isolated in Ud., but with probable external parallels.
Proto-Lezghian: *q:ola / *q:Iola
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: wheat
Lezghian: q:ül
Rutul: ʁɨl
Kryz: q:ul
Budukh: q:ul
Archi: qoqol
Comment: Cf. also Lezg. Khl. q:ül. 3d class in Rut., Arch., but 4th class in Kryz and Bud. There is a vacillation between reflexes of PL *o and *oI (just as in the name of "rye", PL *s:ol q.v.); the pharyngealized variant is reflected in Lezg. and Kryz (without pharyngealisation we would have Lezg. q:ul and Kryz. q:ɨl). The Arch. form is reduplicated. The obl. base can be reconstructed as *q:(I)olä- (cf. Rut. ʁɨ́la-).

    See Лексика 1971, 166; Талибов 1980, 304.

Proto-Lezghian: *q:ul
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 hole 2 hearth 3 wall-niche,nest 4window 5village
Lezghian: q:ul 2
Tabasaran: ʁul 5
Agul: ʁul 3
Rutul: ʁul 1,4
Tsakhur: ʁuĺ 4
Udi: ʁIul 4
Comment: Cf. also Tab. Düb. q:ul 'village', Ag. Bursh. ʕul id., Tsakh. Tsakh. q:uĺ, Gelm. ʁuĺ 'window'. Obl. base *q:ule- (cf. Lezg. q:ula-, Tab. ʁula-, Ag. ʁule-, Rut. ʁuli-, Tsakh. ʁule-). 3d class in Rut., but 4th class in Tsakh. The original meaning is obviously 'hole, opening' (subsequently > 'dwelling hole, nest, settlement').
Proto-Lezghian: *q:unt(a)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: barrow, mound
Lezghian: q:unt
Comment: Erg. q:unt-uni; cf. also Akht. q:unt id. The word is attested only in Lezg., but has a probable Lak. parallel.
Proto-Lezghian: *q:ur
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 stalk 2 k. of grass 3 carrot (plant)
Lezghian: q:ur 1
Tabasaran: ʁur / q:ur 1
Agul: ʁur 2
Rutul: ʁur (Shin.) 1
Tsakhur: ʁur 1
Archi: qur 3
Comment: Obl. base *q:ura- (cf. Tsakh. ʁuro-). 4th class in Arch. and Tsakh.
Proto-Lezghian: *q:u(r)q:ur-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: thunder
Lezghian: q:uq:rum
Comment: An onomatopoeic root; attested only in Lezg., but having obvious external parallels.
Proto-Lezghian: *-q:V
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 future 2 conjunctive
Rutul: -q:a- 1
Archi: -qi 1
Udi: -q:a-n 2
Proto-Lezghian: *q:VlVq:
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: egg
Agul: ʁIaraʁal
Rutul: ʁɨlɨʁ
Udi: qoqla
Comment: Pharyngealization in Ag. is secondary (cf. dial. ʁuraʁal), but a precise reconstruction of vowels is hardly possible (because of the disyllabic root structure and expressive semantics). In Ud. qoqla is Gukasyan's transcription; the MSU recording is qok:la (either a dissimilation, or a misspelling).
Proto-Lezghian: *q:ʷal (~ -l:)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: side
Lezghian: q:ʷal
Tabasaran: ʁʷal
Agul: q:ʷal
Comment: Cf. also Tab. Düb. q:ʷal, Ag. Fit. q:ʷal id. Obl. stem *q:ʷala- (cf. Lezg. q:ʷala-, Tab. ʁʷala-).
Proto-Lezghian: *q:(ʷ)amV-

Proto-Lezghian: *q:ʷaṭ(a) ( ~ q̇:ʷ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: stump

Comment: Isolated in Rut., but having probable external parallels. The word also means 'lock', which is a frequent semantic development ('stump' > 'log, block' > 'lock').
