Proto-Lezghian: *ʡirč̣Vn- ( ~ ħ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to press, squeeze
Rutul: =ir(i)č̣a-
Tsakhur: ho=č̣an-
Archi: č̣aIn-
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡirχ:Iär-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to change
Tabasaran: huǯ-uχI-
Agul: d-aX̀u-b aq̇as
Rutul: k-ɨrχIɨ haʔas
Budukh: čorħ-/čere=ħir-
Archi: χ:Ioro=χ:Ii-
Comment: Cf. also Tab. Düb. hūχI-, Ag. Bursh. ad-iX̀a-. The Archi form is a compound of *o=χIi- 'to change' with the first part χ:Ioro- (cf. χ:Ioro-t:u= 'strange, different', χ:Ioro kes 'to change') - which itself is derived from the same verbal root: χ:Ioro- reflects the stem *ʡirχ:Iär- (with regular reduction of the first narrow vowel), while o=χ:Ii- reflects an Ablaut grade *ʡorχ:Iär- (cf. the same Ablaut grade in Rut. -ɨrχIɨ). The Bud. form contains a preverb č-.
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡiš:än-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to knead (dough) 2 to rub 3 to trample
Lezghian: ṭušun- / ṭišin-
Tabasaran: ṭi=š- 1,2
Agul: ṭiš- 1,2
Kryz: ṭu=šun- 3
Budukh: ʕu-ṭo=šn- 1,2
Archi: š:eIn- 1
Comment: Cf. also Ag. Bursh. ṭišana- / ṭušana- 'to knead (dough), to rub'. The verb belongs to the strong verbal class. All languages except Archi reflect a form with the expressive PL preverb *ṭ-. See Гигинейшвили 1977, 127.
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡiš:ʷ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: night
Lezghian: jif
Tabasaran: jiš̌
Agul: ʕüš
Rutul: wɨš / huš
Kryz: jif
Budukh: juǯenǯiǯ
Archi:
Udi: šü
Comment: Cf. also Lezg. Nüt. jüxʷ, Tab. Düb. již̌i, Ulz. jiš:̌, Ag. Bursh. iš:ʷ, Arch. adv. š:ʷi 'at night' ( = Ud. šü 'night'), Ud. üše adv. 'at night'. Bud. adv. juwu-z id. (the form juǯe-nǯiǯ is a result of early delabialisation and assimilation from *ʡiš:ʷe-). Oblique base *ʡiš:ʷa-, cf. Lezg. jife-/fe-, Tab. jiš̌a-, Rut. wɨši-). 4th class in all class-distinguishing languages.

    See Лексика 1971, 181; Гигинейшвили 1977, 94.

Proto-Lezghian: *ʡɨnšʷ (~ ħ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 horse 2 steed
Lezghian: šiw 2
Archi: noIš 1
Comment: Cf. Arch. erg. niIš-i (pointing to weak *-šʷ). The root is preserved only in Lezg. and Arch., being superseded in other languages by recent loanwords. The development *ʡɨ(n)šʷ > Lezg. šiw is regular (cf. *ʔis:ʷ > siw 'mouth' etc.). In Arch the initial n- is most probably metathesized from Inlaut.
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡočʷa ( ~ -ɨ)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to unbind, untie
Tabasaran: d-u=č-
Archi: oI=ša-
Comment: Cf. Arch. dur. =oIršu-r.
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡoč̣:an- (~-l-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to wash
Tabasaran: u=č:-
Agul: ʕuč:-
Comment: Cf. also Ag. Bursh. ʡülč:an-as 'wash', Tp. (Shaum. with a faulty notation) ʕüč̣anas id.
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡoč̣:Vn-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to clear up (of weather) 2 clear sky
Archi: oI=č̣in- 1
Udi: muč:ur 2
Comment: The Ud. form is a derivate (*w=onč̣:-Vr).
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡoj (~ -u-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: faeces
Agul: ʕuj
Comment: Cf. Ag. Bursh. ʡuj id. Isolated in Ag., with a possible Lak. parallel.
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡorq̇:Ie- (~ -ä)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to lose, be defeated
Archi: o=q̇:Ia-
Comment: A verb with irregular Auslaut alternation (cf. dur. =orq̇:Ii-r). Attested only in Archi, but having probable external parallels.
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡul (~ʡʷi-,-o-,-l:)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: bread
Tabasaran: ül
Agul: ʡül (Bursh.)
Comment: Cf. also Tab. Düb. ül id.
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡʷe(l)s: ( ~ ʔIʷ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 wood, timber 2 firewood
Rutul: us 2
Tsakhur: os 1
Udi: ušI 2
Comment: Obl. base *ʡʷes:a- or *ʡʷes:e-, cf. Rut. úsu-, Tsakh. osa-, Gelm. oIs, oIs:a-. 4th class in Rut. and Tsakh. The root is preserved only in languages where there occurred a simplification of *-lC-clusters, thus the presence of *-l- in PL is postulated only on external evidence.
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡʷiʔ ( ~ -ɨ-,-u-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: meadow, field
Rutul: ʔIuʔI (Ikhr.)
Comment: Cf. also Luch. ʔIur ( < *ʔIuʔ-Vr) id. Attested only in Rut., with a possible Nakh parallel.
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡʷim:
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 string 2 loop 3 string (on a yoke)
Lezghian: jeb 1
Agul: ʕub 1
Rutul: ʔIub 2
Tsakhur: ʔIum 2
Kryz: ʕäbi 3
Budukh: ʕabi 3
Comment: Lezg. erg. jep:-ini. 3d class in all class-distinguishing languages. The obl. base is hard to establish (vocalic base preserved only in Tsakh., with variation ʔIuma-/ʔIumɨ-). The Shakhdagh forms go back to a suffixed building *ʡʷim:V-j. One can not exclude the possibility of relating here also Ud. ülmäj 'button' (if metathesized < *ʡʷim:V-lV-j).
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡʷir
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: lake, pond
Lezghian: wir
Agul: ʕür
Rutul: uIr (Khniukh.)
Comment: Cf. also Lezg. Khl. ür, Yark. hür, Ag. Burk., Tp. ʡür. Obl. base *ʡʷirɨ- (Lezg. wiri-, Ag. ʕüra-, Rut. uIre-). 3d class in Rutul. Cf. perhaps also Ud. orajin 'spring, source'.

    See Хайдаков 1973, 75.
