\data\cauc\nakhet
Proto-Nakh: *da-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: demonstrative pronoun stem
Chechen: dʕā
Ingush: dʕa
Batsbi: da-ħ
Comments: The actual stem da- is clearly seen in Bacb. da-χeʔ "because of that", da-ħ, da-ħa "there". The Chech.-Ing. form dʕā is a contraction from *da-ħa; it served as a basis for the now common demonstrative pronoun dʕā-ra "that".
Proto-Nakh: *dab(V) ( ~ -ā-,-w-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: a woven basket (for corn or for fishing)
Chechen:
Ingush:
Comments: Cf. also Akk. daw(a) id. 6th class in both languages.
Proto-Nakh: *dače-ḳ(a)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 wood, firewood 2 a small fragment of a branch
Chechen: dečig 1
Ingush: daχča 1
Batsbi: dačχar 2 (Imnaishvili)
Comments: 3d class in Chech. and Ing. (in Chech. 4th class with the meaning 'wood (material)'). Ing. -χč- and Bacb. -čχ- in this case go back to *-č-(V)ḳ- (preserved in Chech. as -čig).
Proto-Nakh: *daʁu
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: rain
Chechen: doʁa
Ingush: doʁa
Comments: 3d class in Chech. and Ing. Note that the verbal present stem *-āʁ- ( > Chech. -ōʁu) "to come" has also the meaning "to rain, to snow"; thus the form *daʁu may have been deverbal in PN.
Proto-Nakh: *daHVχ
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: liver
Chechen: doʕaχ
Ingush: dijχk
Batsbi: dʕeʔ
Comments: The PN reconstruction presents some difficulties. Chech. points to *-u- in the 2d syllable (doʕaχ < *daHuχ), Ing. - to *-i- (dīχk < *daHiχ-iḳ with a diminutive suffix) and Bacb. - to *-e-. Final -ʔ in Bacb. is probably a re- sult of assimilation (spirant -χ > laryngeal); anyway, it is impossible to separate the Bacb. form from Chech. and Ing. The word belongs to the 3d class in all languages.
Proto-Nakh: [*-daħ]
Meaning: elative
Batsbi: -daħ
Proto-Nakh: *dak
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 willow 2 a species of willow ("козья верба")
Chechen: dak 1
Ingush: dak 1
Batsbi: dakŏ 2
Comments: Obl. stem *daku- (cf. Chech. doka-; Ing. obl. dako is a result of vowel levelling; the Bacb. form possibly reflects the old obl. stem). 4th class in Ing., 3d class in Chech., Bacb.
Proto-Nakh: *daq
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 asp 2 birch
Chechen: daq 1
Ingush: daq 2
Comments: 3d class in Chech., 4th class in Ing. Obl. base *daqo- (Chech. doqa-, Ing. daqo).
Proto-Nakh: *daq̇a
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: dead body
Chechen: daq̇a
Ingush: daq̇a
Batsbi: daq̇(ŏ)
Comments: Obl. base *daq̇u- (Chech. doq̇a-, Ing. with vowel levelling daq̇o). 3d class in all languages.
Proto-Nakh: *darc ( ~ -ā-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: snowstorm
Chechen: darc
Comments: Obl. base darca-; vowel length unclear.
Proto-Nakh: *darʁa
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: arc (of a bow)
Chechen: ʕad-darʁa
Ingush: ʕad-darʁa
Comments: A compound with the first part *ʡāṭɦ 'bow' (q.v.). 4th class in both languages. One wonders if the Avar form gazárʁo 'bow' does not reflect a compound (for the first part cf. gazá 'hoe'?) with an old borrowing from Nakh (gazarʁo < *gaz-darʁo).
Proto-Nakh: *daš
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: lead
Chechen: daš
Ingush: daš
Comments: Obl. stem *dašu- (Chech. doša-, Ing. dašo with vowel levelling). 3d class in both languages.
Proto-Nakh: *dašVb
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: gold
Chechen: deši
Ingush: došuw
Comments: 3d class in both languages. Cf. also Chech. (Uslar) dešī, (Imnaishvili) dešij id.
Proto-Nakh: *datta ( ~ -ā-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: rowan tree
Chechen: datta
Batsbi: tatt
Comments: The Chech. word is quoted from the Russ.-Chech. dictionary, thus class, obl. stem and vowel length are unknown. Bacb. tatt is probably a result of assimilation ( < *datt).
Proto-Nakh: *daχḳa
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: mouse
Chechen: daχka
Ingush: daχka
Batsbi: daχḳŏ
Comments: 6th class in all languages. Obl. base *daχḳi-, cf. Chech. deχka-, Ing. deχko, Bacb. daχḳe-.
Proto-Nakh: *dād(a)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: father
Chechen:
Ingush: da
Batsbi: dad
Comments: Cf. Bacb. (in Desheriyev's notation) dād (probably pointing to long *ā).
Proto-Nakh: *dāli
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: god
Chechen: dēla
Ingush: däla
Batsbi: dal, dalĕ
Proto-Nakh: *dāq̇ur
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: forage, fodder
Chechen: dōq̇ar
Ingush: dɔq̇ar
Comments: 3d class in both languages.
Proto-Nakh: *dātti-n
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: butter
Chechen: dätta
Ingush: dätta
Batsbi: dattẽ
Comments: 3d class in all languages. Final *-n (historically a suffix) is reflected in the Bacb. nasalisation and in the Chech. obl. stem (dättana-).
Proto-Nakh: *dāχo-ni
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: cattle
Chechen: däχni
Ingush: dɔχan
Batsbi: daχnĕ
Comments: 3d class in all languages.
