K. Reshetnikov's notes:According to Rédei, Khanty and Mansi words like Khanty O ȧrt-ȧlǝ- 'prüfen, befühlen, betrachten, sich erkundigen; to check, feel, grope, look, examine, inquire', Ni. art-at- 'nachsinnen, überlegen; to tnink over', Mansi Ss. ārtal- 'untersuchen, prüfen, mutmaßen; to explore, check, suppose, guess', Pe. ārtl-ākt- 'einander fragen; to ask each other' are not genetic cognates but Komi loans (therefore, this Finno-Ugric word has no immediate reflexes in Ob-Ugric languages). Judging by the shape of the Ob-Ugric forms, this solution is correct (the semantical correlation also can be analysed on the basis of this hypothesis).

K. Reshetnikov's notes:Helimski's comparison of Sam. *ǝtǝ- 'to see; to become visible' with *itä- 'to sprout, to appear, to become visible, to grow' (present in FB and Khanty) seems acceptable (although his note "vgl. auch U *oc'a-" is unclear, because material united under U *oc'a - or rather *oča- - indicates a medial *-č-, not *-t-, and includes Selk. forms definitely not identic with those reflecting Sam. *ǝtǝ-). Therefore, Udmurt ut- 'to look etc.', which is compared with Sam. *ǝtǝ- 'to see etc.' in UEW, becomes isolated. I present here an old comparison suggested in Paas. Beitr. 114 (although it is rejected in UEW). For semantics (Udm. 'to look, to examine; to guard, to defend' ~ Sam. 'to wait') cf. the above mentioned *oča- (Rec. 667), where we have 'to watch, to guard' in Selk. and 'to wait' in FW, and, besides, Lat. specto ~ expecto etc. However, it should be taken into account that Sam. *ǝt- 'to wait' (unlike Sam. *ǝtǝ- 'to see; to become visible') may belong just to *oča-, thus supplementing the Samoyed part of this etymology and being related to FW words meaning 'to wait'.
K. Reshetnikov's notes:A quite strange case - vowel correspondences are absolutely irregular. The Mansi forms may be borrowed from Khanty. Hun. i- < *ɨ- (which could partly clarify the picture): doubtful because of the palatal vowel in the second syllable (iz-é, not **iz-a). The Lapp. form rather points to *ätV.
