Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔǝqe
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: branch
Ket: ъ̄ʁǝ1 (Imb.; S.-Imb. ъ̄ʁ), pl. ʌʁɨn5 // ʌ:n
Yug: ъ:x, pl. ʌxɨn5
Kottish: ogé, *ṓge, *ṓke, g. ogei, pl. ogán, okan
Pumpokol: kédiŋ jaxi (Срсл.) "branch, bough" (kediŋ "root")
Comments: ССЕ 192. Werner 2, 420 <*ʌ̀Gé>.
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔǝt-
Meaning: from the river to the shore; from the shore to the wood
Ket: ʌ́ta; ʌt, ʌt́ 'come here' (ʌt́ = Yug. ʌtej)
Yug: ʌtej
Kottish: ota 'come here' (imper.); itōj- 'to come'
Comments: ССЕ 192. Werner 2, 386, 411, 412 (w.r.). The root is widely used as a preverb (see e.g. under *ʔɨ̄s-).
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔǝ̄ke (~x-)
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: louse
Ket: ʌ:ɣǝ4 (North.), South. ʌɣ4; pl. ʌɣeń5
Yug: ʌ:hk, pl. ʌgɨn5
Kottish: iki, pl. ikáŋ
Comments: ССЕ 192. Werner 2, 414 <*(d')ʌʔǝgǝ> - with an obviously erroneous *d'- (would be *j- in our reconstruction) - because Kott. d́oga 'nit' is attributed to two roots at once (see *jog-), notwithstanding the clear distinction between iki 'louse' and d́oga 'nit'.
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔǝ̄ŕi- (~j-, x-,-r1-)
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: twins
Ket: (ɨn) ʌ:ĺsin3
Yug: (ɨn) ъ̄riŋgisi1
Comments: ССЕ 192. Werner 2, 417.
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔiʔ(G) (~x-)
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: loft, store
Ket: iʔ, pl. eʔŋ
Yug: iʔ, pl. eʔŋ
Comments: ССЕ 192. Werner 1, 389 <*iʔ / *ig(ǝ)>.
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔiʔn
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: needle
Ket: iʔn, pl. ɛnǝŋ5
Yug: iʔn, pl. ɛnɨŋ5
Kottish: in, īn, pl. inaŋ, īnaŋ; (Бол.) in
Arin: in (Лоск.)
Comments: ССЕ 192. Werner 1, 390.
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔi(ʔ)n- (~x-)
Meaning: long, long ago
Ket: īn // iʔn 'long', īnam 'long ago'; South. iʔń 'long'
Yug: i:hn
Comments: ССЕ 192. Unclear prosodic correlations: Ket reflects*(x)in- / *(x)iʔn-, Yug - *(x)īn-. Werner 1, 393 (without reconstruction).
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔiʔs (~x-)
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: peg
Ket: iʔś, pl. ɛśǝŋ5
Yug: iʔs, pl. ɛsɨŋ5
Kottish: iš-thip (thip iron)
Comments: ССЕ 192. Werner 1, 390.
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔic-
Meaning: nomadizing, to nomadize
Ket: itaŋ5
Yug: íčaŋ (Werner 1, 383)
Kottish: a-ith-ox 'nomadizing', aithog-ākŋ, praet. aitho-l-ōkŋ 'to nomadize'; (M, Kl) itik 'way'
Comments: In ССЕ 194 I have reconstructed *ʔit- 'nomadize' on the basis of Ket. itaŋ and Kott. aithox, and Werner 1, 383 accepts this reconstruction. However, he also adduces Yug. íčaŋ id. which makes such a reconstruction impossible and forces me to change it to *ʔic- (see the correspondences in КС 150-151).
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔiG
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: name
Ket: ī, pl. ɛʔŋ
Yug: i, pl. ɛʔŋ
Kottish: ix (īx), pl. īkŋ / ekŋ / eäkŋ
Pumpokol: i (Сл.)
Comments: ССЕ 193. Werner 1, 392 <*igǝ>.
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔik
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: skin (of animals, hairy); hair
Ket: ī 'skin', pl. iʔŋ; iŋɔĺt5 / iŋɔĺtǝ5, pl. iŋɔĺtǝŋ5 id.
Yug: ijɔl5 / igɔl5, pl. iŋgɔlɨŋ5 "skin"
Kottish: ēk, pl. ēkán, ēkŋ "hair"
Comments: ССЕ 193. Cf. also Ket. -iɣ-aq "to flay". The paradigm of igɔl in Yug is interesting: it shows that here we have a compound of *ʔik with some second component, each member gaving its own plural: igɔl - iŋ-gɔlɨŋ. The original meaning of the component -gɔl can only be guessed: cf. perhaps PEC *G_ŏŁV "skin" (NCED 463)? Werner 1, 392 <*igǝ>, doubting (for a not quite clear reason) the relationship of Kottish ēk 'hair'.
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔiK-
Meaning: to bind, tie
Ket: ikśiŋ
Yug: íksiŋ (W. 1, 356)
Kottish: šigaŋ, šiŋaŋ 'to bind'
Comments: ССЕ 193. The root structure is not quite clear: Ket has a separate stem śiŋ (śɨʔŋ) 'to bind', so ikśiŋ is probably a compound. The Kottish form šiŋ-aŋ is a good match for Ket. śiŋ, while šigaŋ may be an irregular development of a form *ig-šiŋaŋ ( = Ket. ikśiŋ). Werner 1, 356.
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔik- ( ~ x-, -x-)
Meaning: to gather, collect
Ket: íɣ-et
Yug: ig-ɛ:h
Comments: Werner 1, 388 (w.r.).
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔiL- (~x-)
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: wheel
Ket: iĺtǝp6, pl. iĺtaŋ5, eĺtaŋ5
Comments: ССЕ 193. A compound with PY *tap- 'circle, hoop' q.v. in the second part. Werner's (1, 361) analysis of *ʔiL- as 'small' is not based on any evidence.
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔil (~x-,-ĺ,-r)
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to break, split
Ket: iĺbǝt6 / iĺvǝt6
Yug: ilbɛt́5,6
Comments: ССЕ 193. Cf. also Imb. ilaq6 'chip, splinter' ("split wood"), iĺ, iĺĺeś (Werner 1, 357) "Krümchen", ílɨŋ 'slivers' (Werner 1, 361), Yug ílɨŋ id. (ibid.). Werner 1, 357, 358 (but the suggested semantics *'small' seems to be not justified by any evidence).
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔim (~x-)
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: nut
Ket: īm
Yug: im
Kottish: īm, pl. īman, īmaŋ "nut kernel"; Ass. (Бол.) im "nut"
Arin: im (Лоск.)
Comments: ССЕ 193-194. Werner 1, 393 *im.
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔińej ( / *ʔińeŋ)
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: being there
Ket: íńej, íńij, īŋ
Yug: īŋ
Kottish: ińi 'here', in-čaŋ 'from here', ińu 'this'
Comments: Werner 1, 367, 368, 369, 395 (without comparison and reconstruction).
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔipɨn (~x-)
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to stand
Ket: īn
Yug: ifɨn6; tīp, tífɨŋ 'to stop still'
Comments: ССЕ 194. Werner 1, 393-394 *iphǝn.
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔir- ( ~ x-)
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to eat
Ket: iĺeŋ5
Yug: iriŋ5
Kottish: herajaŋ 'feeding, food', herai, harai 'bread, food'; Ass. (Бол.) raj 'food', (М, Сл, Срсл) rajalí, grajalí 'eat'
Comments: ССЕ 194. Werner 1, 360 <*iʎ-> (without comparing the Kott. form). Note that this example allows to update the rule formulated in КС 148: *r yields Yug -r- not only in the vicinity of *u, but also in the vicinity of *i.
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔir1- (~x-)
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: breath, spirit
Ket: īĺ / iʔĺ, pl. ɛĺǝŋ5; ɛĺiŋ-bet5 'to breathe'
Yug: īr, pl. ɛrɨŋ5, ɛrǝŋ5
Comments: ССЕ 194. Werner 1, 390 <*iʔʎ>.
