ALBUMS
THE GILDED PALACE OF SIN

Richard Nightingale <manchester@blackwell.co.uk> (16.01.2003)

Great album, but did country rock start here?.The answer is no, just listen to the stuff Buck Owens recorded in the early sixties, that was the true beginnings of country rock. However this album avoids most of the cliches associated with country music while staying true to the spirit of the music.Gram Parsons gets all the credit for this album and he shoudn't, Chris Hillman co wrote nearly all the songs here and should be placed just as high for his contribution to this style of music. The only bad track on here is the last one, talking your way through a song might work for Lou Reed but not at the end of a country rock album.Hang on a minute Willy Nelson's been doing that all his life and it works for him, maybe the song is just crap.Anyway I'm not going to let one bad track ruin one of the best albums ever made.I'd give this 15 (Yet another great album from 1969!)
