HOT TUNA

An 11 is just about right for the original album. It real is charming, with impressive instrumentation and fine singing. On the original record, the highlights are without a doubt "Death Don't Have No Mercy" and Kaukonen's instrumental "Mann's Fate," which is just plain cool. My major disagreement over your review is that you claim the bonus tracks "detract from the album." Now I have never heard the second album with the electric versions of these tunes, but in my opinion, "Keep Your Lamps Trimmed And Burning," is almost as good as "Death Don't Have No Mercy." It is moody as hell and that harmonica and spooky voice, combined with the crazy bass lines and fast pace throughout really make it stand out from the songs on the original.

I also think Kaukonen's "True Religion" is poignant with some great recycled lyrics about coming to terms with an eminent death. Come on Georgey-boy, this tune rules. "Come Back Baby" might be a little too long at 6 minutes, but the harmonica playing adds so much attitude, I could enjoy the hell out of it for another 6. You were right about "Belly Shadows" in that it rules, which leaves "Candy Man" as the only bonus track that is less than absolutely essential (I actually think it is boring beyond belief). The remastered version deserves a high 11, probably even a 12 and all you blues/roots rock fans that don't have this album are truly missing out.
